AIR QUALITY HUB

We welcomed Camden Council’s development of the ‘Climate Action Plan 2020-2025’, an ambitious five-year strategy working towards a net zero carbon Camden by 2030. The plan includes guidance for businesses striving for environmentally conscious operations, and we are committed to ensuring our members have the support they need, as well as making our own contributions to reaching this goal. We will continue to improve green space, protect local air quality and contribute to a city-wide effort to create a more sustainable future.

EUSTON GREEN LINK

A half mile walking route between Euston Station and Regents Park, punctuated by imaginative green infrastructure including a green wall, bold and colourful planters and a new public pocket park, reintroducing a sense of nature the neighbourhood’s construction and urban sprawl.  To introduce local residents and employees to the project we hosted zero food waste cookery classes with Hubbub. We also partnered with Invisible Dust for ‘Under Her Eye’, a climate change summit celebrating the role of women in the fight for our environment. The project helped to launch the Euston Green Link and put a spotlight on the local area’s illegally high pollution levels. The project is part funded by the Mayor of London, designed to align with the ‘Healthy High Streets’ strategy and is being continuously developed.

REIMAGINING DRUMMOND STREET

As part of the Euston Green Link, we have developed a community-led regeneration vision to further enhance the vibrant and diverse neighbourhood that is Drummond Street. We are committed to supporting Drummond Street’s independent businesses through a series of events, promotions and streetscape improvements. The first phase of the regeneration will see car parking spaces replaced with creative and green seating areas, improving this walking and cycling route to create a refreshing, people-friendly streetscape that provides both health and economic benefits.

PEDESTRIANISATION

You can read our article that explores the potential of pedestrianisation, ‘Beyond the Pandemic: Reclaiming our Streets’. The absence of cars and activity from our high streets during this lockdown has allowed us to visualise a future for public realm design that prioritises people, independent businesses, experience and culture. Pollution is connected to 9,400 deaths per year in London — this is a public health emergency. The current lockdown has seen a total departure from our usual habits and convenience, shifting our perspective on what we value. We believe in seizing this opportunity for radical change, and will work with Camden Council to achieve a sustainable future for our neighbourhoods – something that seemed almost impossible at the start of the year.

DRUMMOND CRESCENT

We have started work with Oobe landscape architects to create a wildlife walkway along Drummond Crescent, a key gateway to Chalton Street that will begin to link east and west of Euston station. This permeable green route will help to reinstate some of the greenery lost to Hs2. The creative wildlife and planter installation will signify the beginning of our further ambitious plans that place Euston as a green, environmentally conscious neighbourhood.

JASMINE PRADISSITTO X CPT INSTALLATION

We have commissioned physicist and sculptor Jasmine Pradissitto to create an installation using an innovative geopolymer that absorbs harmful nitrogen dioxide, allowing it to react with rainwater and transform into a harmless gas. This is the first use of the material, and we cannot wait for the sculpture to be installed outside Camden People’s Theatre in the coming months. We hope to highlight London’s air quality crisis, using the sculpture and our Culture Strategy to engage local people in the facts of climate change, empowering them to make their own impactful changes.  .
